Capturing Africa's Soul Through Sound

Hi, I’m Skill Sawasawa — a sound creator, guitarist, and cultural documentarian. I create original music that highlights the richness of African cultures. My aim is to fuse these timeless influences with today’s music to offer something new while remaining true to their roots. I am also committed to the preservation and documentation of traditional African sounds. Since 2022, I have been on a mission to record, archive, and sample the unique audio landscape of Congo. I continue to pursue my dream across different countries in East Africa.

Preservation

Kongo Sound Conservation

The Kongo Sound Conservation project is my ongoing effort to document and safeguard the musical and sonic heritage of our traditions and culture. I safeguard these sounds for future generations, allowing their spirit to resonate around the world. Every melody, every rhythm, every sound carries the stories of our ancestors, the heartbeat of our land, and the emotions of our people.

The Sounds of My City

I also record the everyday sounds of Goma — from the laughter of children and market chatter to street sounds and the atmosphere. These sounds breathe life into my creations, adding depth and authenticity while revealing the beauty of my home.

My Studio — Sawasound

At Sawasound Studio, I bring together traditional and modern sounds. It’s a space where heritage meets innovation — where I record, mix, and produce music that carries the soul of our culture. This studio is also a space for preservation. I create sound libraries, archives, and historical soundscapes of the region.

MUSIC

Vitar

From melancholy comes music that tells of the pain and fear left behind by trauma. But as the notes unfold, an unshakeable strength emerges: that of resilience. This mini-album is rooted in chaos. Its sounds come from the detonation of bombs and gunfire recorded during the offensive on Goma. From January 26 to 29, 2025, explosions tore the silence relentlessly, plunging the city and its inhabitants into confusion. In the face of this storm, my guitar became a refuge. It carried my fear, my pain, but also my hope. Note after note, it sang of my people’s resistance, the call for peace and the return of love

Let’s Work Together!
